Purpose of your role

As a Portfolio Architect, you will provide leadership and Enterprise Architecture services to business and technology stakeholders in order to direct the investment and transformation, from an architecture perspective, ensuring strategic initiatives are delivered in line with the business, technology and data strategies. This includes working with senior business stakeholders to understand and develop their longer-term vision, aligning roadmaps to this, developing technology roadmaps that align to both the business vision as well as technology objectives, and providing guidance on M&A activity.

To give a sense of scale, $500m is spent on technology per year and about 30% of that is allocated to this business department. The Enterprise Architecture team, provides direction and acts as guardian for this investment and we are looking for someone to shape and define the digital strategy, including articulating and refining our competitive advantage, key growth opportunities and trends to focus on, drawing on market trends, insights from adjacent markets, customer feedback and developments across all aspects of our portfolio.

Key Responsibilities


  • Identify the current state of how technology is used in the organisation, what technologies are being used and how they are deployed along with the business value the technology is providing.
  • Work with stakeholders to understand business drivers and business capabilities (future and current state) and determine corresponding enterprise system designs and change requirements to drive the organisation's targeted customer outcomes.
  • Work as part of the team in proposing and gaining agreement for target application architecture that includes the articulation of a clear transformation roadmap.
  • Manage key business stakeholders to achieve consensus agreement to vision and roadmap.
  • Ensure that technology solutions to business problems are both pragmatic and supportive of the global strategic architecture direction.
  • Develop architectures that are aligned to business goals, drivers and strategies, drawing on knowledge of current and possible future business trends, policies and practices and business competition landscape.


  • Maintain a forward-looking perspective on emerging technology developments and their relevance to business and technology strategies.
  • Monitor technology developments to ensure that the organisation is effectively positioned to respond to and leverage opportunities that enhance competitive position through the effective application of technology to the business.
  • Develop a roadmap for the evolution of the enterprise application portfolio from future to current state.
  • Understand, advocate and augment the principles of information technology strategies.

Lead & Communicate

  • Be an advisor to the business and technology leads on architecture and strategy.
  • Act as a senior leader within the Technology department (3000+ members).
  • Proactively communicate decisions, roadmaps and insight to technology and business colleagues.
  • Proactively input into and provide architectural leadership to governance forums.


  • Participate in the development of new concepts to support business strategy and provide recommendations to leverage technology for competitive advantage, internal efficiency and improved service.
  • Participate in managing vendor relationships for new and existing products, evaluating usefulness and cost of products and making appropriate recommendations.


  • Design and deliver the transformation of the technology estate, together with technology and business teams.
  • Translate high level business architecture into technology architectures that align to global strategies, simplify the existing architecture, deliver cost saving opportunities and, where appropriate, reusable services.

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Designed & delivered large transformation programme from legacy to new technology.
  • Extensive experience in financial services or other highly regulated sector.
  • Experience with and strong in working with C-suite leadership.
  • Skilled in the architecture, design and implementation of complex technology solutions.
  • Strong communication skills with different types and levels of stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Effective leadership skills including negotiation, conflict resolution, influencing, bridge-building and political astuteness.
  • Hands-on experience managing end-to-end systems development from customer specifications through to deployment.
  • Experience of managing technology driven business process change.
  • The ability to convey complex, abstract technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A good understanding of financial markets, products and organisations.
  • Excellent and resourceful problem-solving skills, adaptable with a willingness to learn.
  • Proactive and self-organising with a “can-do” approach.

    As the adoption of Data, Analytics and Intelligent Automation continues, the role of this Applied Science Automation Designer is to ensure that these capabilities are playing an effective role in advising the Group’s Transformation agenda. Helping ensure we continuously improve outcomes for customers by having a comprehensive understanding of their financial behaviours and the products, services and processes that meet their needs.

    The role is focused on creating awareness and driving adoption of Data, Analytics and Intelligent Automation across a broad range of domains. Working collaboratively with delivery teams in the Chief Data Office and Intelligent Automation labs to apply expertise in order to shape solutions and drive data centric ways of working and deliver Automation solutions.

    Working within a small team you'll have the opportunity to influence significant and enduring change; helping improve customer experience and reach the right outcomes for customers.

    The main purpose of this role is to advocate and drive greater adoption of Data, Analytics and Intelligent Automation. Working collaboratively across a broad range of customers to identify and recommend where Applied Science tools, techniques and capabilities can improve customer outcomes and realise commercial value. Shaping new implementations and working collaboratively with the Bank of the Future and other customers to effectively resource and deliver change, realise value and deliver better outcomes for customers. You'll be key to the positioning and communication of these capabilities to colleagues across the Group.

    For this role the specific Applied Science capabilities of interest are aligned to our Intelligent Automation enablers of Digital Products, Natural Language Analytics Products, Virtual Assistants, RPA+ and Machine Learning Platforms.

    • Demonstrable experience (direct or indirect) in one or more Intelligent Automation (IA) capabilities like Chatbot, RPA, Document Processing, Machine Learning, Speech Analytics.
    • Have a good understanding of more than one financial product end to end journey. On-boarding and/or Servicing journeys.
    • Experienced in working with senior stakeholders helping them taking critical decisions.
    • Experienced in supporting multiple business areas/projects at the same time.
    • Experienced in writing proposal document – Desired skill.
    • Challenging the status quo where appropriate to improve customer and colleague journeys

    I am currently working with an investment management company set up to pursue systematic trading strategies (currently have 5bn assets under management).

    The team are open to any programming language background with a willingness to work with Python: strong CS fundamentals and problem-solving skills matter more to the team than experience in a particular language. No finance experience is required.

    The existing team of 7 are looking for two developers to join and work on:

    - New FX and Futures execution systems
    - New Market Data projects
    - Assisting with the implementation of containers and cloud tech

    2 days per week in the office, willing to wait for candidate's bonus to be paid in Q1 before you join the team.

    Required skills:

    - Proven experience working with Python or other programming languages
