Recently the organisation has seen significant growth, with a Autonet online and van insurance specialist acquiring two major insurers into its group the organisation are growing rapidly

To support this there is a unique opportunity for a practically minded and commercially focussed solicitor to take on a new role within a an innovative business.

Structure of the Role:

  • This is a role for an in-house solicitor to work alongside the Senior Legal Counsel for Insurance Broking, which is the largest division within the Group, employing around 4000 people across the UK.
  • The role forms part of the COO and broking division, however The Group has a dedicated legal team for specialist legal matters, such as litigation and employment, which will support this dedicated role.
  • The role will require direct contact with clients around the business, allowing the successful candidate to build strong relationships.
  • The role will require the successful candidate to be able to work independently with reducing supervision, and to be confident enough to research and then recommend pragmatic, business-focused solutions.
  • The role can be based in Manchester, Norwich, Colchester, Maidstone or Bury St. Edmonds. Travel to London will be required from time to time, where the Senior Legal Counsel is based.

Purpose of the Role:

  • To work with the Senior Legal Counsel to provide general legal guidance, assistance and advice to the Insurance Broking division on a day-to-day basis.
  • Drafting, negotiating and amending a wide and varied range of commercial agreements, including IT, outsourcing, marketing agreements, insurance-specific commercial agreements such as panel distribution agreements and advising on contracts for public sector tenders. This will involve working closely with colleagues to drafting and negotiating contracts in line with the strategy and values of the organisation.
  • Providing day-to-day advice on wider commercial matters, including data protection and use of data within commercial arrangements.
  • Supporting the business in following the right legal contracting compliance procedures, to ensure effective contracting, procurement and negotiation.
  • Helping to develop and draft key standard documentation, including policies and precedents.

Criteria – must be clearly demonstrated on CV

  • Solicitor qualified in England and Wales, or an equivalent foreign jurisdiction qualification
  • 2-5 PQE
  • Trained at a reputable firm
  • Experience of reviewing and negotiating a range of commercial agreements
  • Some in-house experience is preferred but is not essential
  • Knowledge, attention to detail and the ability to work as part of a small highly skilled team is essential as the role will necessarily be broad and varied
  • Able to apply legal knowledge in a commercial context.
  • Able to manage stakeholders at all levels of the business
  • Able to prioritise work and to work well under pressure
  • Knowledge of Financial Services regulatory requirements (not essential but preferred)
  • Knowledge of GDPR and data handling requirements
  • Flexible and adaptable personal style with strong influencing and negotiation skills

  • Accounts Department Manager
    Up to £60000 per annum

    As Accounts Department Manager you will be the primary client contact for your given portfolio working closely with the relevant Director. You will have exposure to a wide range of clients and industries tailored to both your expertise and future career progression. Client contact will vary based on individual client demands from almost weekly to annually. Together with the other accounts managers you will be responsible for allocating client assignments within the work planner, to the correct level of accounts team member and ensuring the work is completed on time and within budget. You will be expected to provide constructive mentoring support to the accounts team as they continue on their professional journey.

    Together with the other accounts managers, you should be continually looking for improvements within the client experience, internal efficiencies and accounts department team welfare.

    You will be expected to work autonomously, managing and evaluating various client and internal demands to achieve agreed deadlines. Our clients strives to continually exceed client expectations on service and delivery.

    A proven track record of expertise in accounting and corporate tax and within varied industries is a pre-requisite for the role. A good level of VAT and personal tax is also important.

    IT knowledge is critical and you must be competent on Excel. You should also be comfortable with cloud based bookkeeping solutions. Financial modelling and cash flow projections are also often required by clients .

    The role will be primarily office based, though our client encourages Accounts Department Managers to visit key clients as well as attending external meetings with the Directors. In addition, they would look to accounts department managers to look to get involved in business development

    Job role:

    • Manage a client portfolio of 75-100 limited company clients
    • Portfolio expected to manage of c£400k
    • Allocation of client assignments and team members on the work planner
    • Review and feedback of accounts and supporting file
    • Day to day client queries
    • Be part of a management team responsible for the efficiencies and mentoring of the accounts department
    • Budgeting and WIP management of client portfolio
    • Weekly meetings and reporting with Directors
    • Ensure technically up to date with latest accounting and tax aspects
    • Taking on small short-term internal projects as they arise


    • ACCA/ACA qualified
    • Good knowledge of bookkeeping packages including Sage, Xero and Receipt Bank
    • Excellent knowledge of Excel and data analysis techniques
    • Good level knowledge of VAT, rules and schemes
    • A good level of personal tax knowledge would be advantageous
    • Knowledge of IRIS accounts suite would be advantageous
    • Some previous audit exposure would be advantageous
    • Superb written and spoken English
    • Must be highly enthusiastic and self-motivated
    • Can work as part of a team or independently

  • Legal Counsel
    £70000 - £90000 per annum

    Legal Counsel for a middium size Bank with responsibilities including:

    • To draft, review and approve banking facility agreements with emphasis on trade finance facilities
    • To advise on legal risk deriving from either the documentation or transaction structure
    • To draft template documentation for use by the Risk Administration team or Front Office
    • To provide documentation guides and training on legal documentation and legal risk
    • To review and negotiate IT software and maintenance agreements
    • To review and negotiate other Vendor supply agreements
    • To represent the Legal Department at cross departmental meetings and project groups
    • To review policies and procedures and make recommendations
    • To support the Company Secretarial function
    • To provide advice on matters of English law to the Bank and the non-UK branches and subsidiaries, if requested
    • To contribute to the efficient and effective provision of legal services to the Bank
    • Comply with the FCA/PRA’s Individual Conduct Rules, as outlined below.

    Skills/knowledge required:

    • Knowledge of Trade Finance structures, including Letters of Credit, Import & Export Finance, Forfaiting
    • Knowledge of UCP 600 and other relevant ICC publications
    • Strong knowledge of LMA Documentation suite
    • Knowledge of Risk Participations, both funded and unfunded
    • Knowledge of Hedging and Treasury documentation – ISDA, GMRA
    • Knowledge of Property Finance – Investment finance and property development finance
    • Competence at drafting agreements without precedents
    • Capable of utilising legal knowledge in one specialism in unfamiliar situations
    • Capable of suggesting and agreeing alternative Legal solutions to presented structures
    • Understanding of banking regulatory framework, particularly FCA customer rules
    • Demonstrable experience in developing good relationships with Business teams
    • Prepared to work across the spectrum of simple to complex documentation

    Experience and qualifications required:

    • Qualified English Solicitor (Circa 3-5 years PQE)
    • Strong law firm training on both legal competencies and subject knowledge
    • Capable of working with light supervision on Trade Finance Facility documentation
    • Capable of working with little supervision on LMA Documentation
    • Experience of EMEA finance markets
